What is Skimming?
Skimming is a method of applying a smooth and flat finish to walls. A plaster skim will cover any imperfections on the wall, smooth out any uneven areas, hide the joints between plasterboard panels, and create an even surface for painting or decorating.
Skimming is usually only necessary if the walls are in poor condition, as minor imperfections can be filled and sanded down before painting. However, if the walls are very uneven or have large holes or cracks, then skimming may be the best option.
Skim coat plaster is a thin layer of plaster that is applied to the surface of walls and ceilings. It is used to create a smooth, even surface for painting or wallpapering.
There are two types of skim coat plaster: ready-mixed and dry mix. Ready-mixed plaster is pre-mixed with water and does not require any additional mixing. Dry mix plaster must be mixed with water before it can be used.
Dry mix plaster is usually cheaper but can be more difficult to use.
To apply the skim coat plaster, you will need to prepare the walls by filling any holes and cracks with filler, sanding down any lumps or bumps in the surface of the wall with sandpaper, and removing any wallpaper. The finished surface should be clean and dust-free before applying the primer or adhesive.
The next step is to mix the plaster with water according to the manufacturer’s instructions. The plaster should have a creamy consistency – not too runny or too thick. Use a wide putty knife or trowel for skimming large areas, such as walls and ceilings; long-handled brushes are suitable for smaller areas such as window frames and skirting boards.
To apply the plaster, start at the top of the wall and work your way down, smoothing it out as you go with long, sweeping motions until the surface is flat and even. It can be helpful to have a second person standing by to help hold ladders or steady furniture while you work.
When the entire surface has been coated in skim coat plaster, leave it to dry for several hours before sanding it down with medium-grit sandpaper to create an ultra-smooth finish. This will prepare the walls for painting or decorating.
Skimming is a relatively straightforward process that can transform tired and damaged walls into smooth and flawless surfaces, perfect for wallpapering or painting.
